Office Suite of the Year

What do you use to escape MS Office?

vharishankar 12-30-2004 08:48 PM

Hey. There's no poll for this topic!

jeremy 12-30-2004 08:52 PM

The polls were hidden for about 30 seconds to do some quick maintenance. Should be fine now.

aizkorri 12-31-2004 06:13 AM

openoffice..., hehe, that's another great job, nice project.

vharishankar 12-31-2004 06:17 AM

OpenOffice must get the prize. It seems to be the most promising Open Source Office suite and also has Windows versions which will surely help in bringing down the dominance of MS Office.

darkleaf 12-31-2004 08:24 AM

OpenOffice.org. Can't wait till version 2.0, better support between operating systems :)

mjjzf 12-31-2004 08:56 AM

Is CrossOver Office an office suite? Is this a poll for MS-Office on CxOffice?
Anyway, a dead giveaway to OOo.

davecs 12-31-2004 09:29 AM

For all its annoyances (ugly as sin, for one) there's no getting away from Open Office as the best Office suite for Linux, Mac and Windows!

World domination to follow!

OmegaBlac 12-31-2004 02:17 PM

OO.org is the only suite I use so thats what I voted for.

zaicheke 12-31-2004 10:29 PM

OO is very slow on Mac and has to run with X. It is definitely not the best for mac.

Lindlar 01-01-2005 05:16 AM

I use abiword and gnumeric.

kesara 01-01-2005 05:19 AM

I like Open Office it is very slow:-(
@ My favorite is KOffice.

Snowolf 01-01-2005 11:01 AM

OpenOffice.org 1.9m65

carmichaelbaby 01-01-2005 05:56 PM

hmm

I haven't really tried anything other than
open office, so m vote wouldn't exactly be "fair".

MrKrabs 01-01-2005 06:03 PM

Here again Open Office.:D

JLP 01-01-2005 06:47 PM

OpenOffice.org

ultramouse 01-01-2005 06:53 PM

There's no contest in this category, especially with the new 2.0 beta. OOo has totally replaced Office on my Windows machine as well, much to the confusion of my co workers.

thumper 01-01-2005 10:42 PM

open office. count me in as looking forward to a 2.0 release.

blabla 01-01-2005 11:27 PM

OOo is so slOOow

but unbeatable once it's actually up - replaced MS-Office on my WIN partition about a year ago.

blabla

fotoguy 01-01-2005 11:59 PM

I've only use OpenOffice, but still gets my vote as one that has all the functions I require. Have to check the others out though to make a real comparison

lin_user2004 01-02-2005 12:08 AM

Open office.org though am yet 2 try out others. It has seemed a very good project.

reddazz 01-02-2005 12:16 AM

I mostly use openoffice, but I also like koffice very much especially the templates that are included in kspead and kword, they make my working life easier.

fcaraballo 01-02-2005 01:06 AM

OOo

MagicMan

carstenbjensen 01-02-2005 04:48 AM

GNOME Office...

It gives me the programs, that I need, and its free software!

OpenOffice is great and big slow, but the main reason, I don't EVER use it, is because it can't be compilled without JAVA, which makes it a non-free program!

uvramana 01-02-2005 05:51 AM

OpenOffice.org

1madstork 01-02-2005 09:40 AM

OpenOffice rocks!

AdrianTM 01-02-2005 10:03 AM

KOffice would get my vote if it would be more compatible with .doc files.

soylentgreen 01-02-2005 10:30 AM

i use abiword and gnumeric too...

so i guess i won't vote ;)

tassietiger 01-02-2005 04:01 PM

koffice rules, but oo pretty close

RobertP 01-02-2005 06:38 PM

I started with StarOffice 5.2 when I first used Linux. It was a drag on that poky machine. When OO 1.0 was released I heard the news at 0830 and found a relaxed server somewhere in the world and had it installed on my whole network by noon. There were a few nasty bugs, but lately it is serving very well in schools and offices where it gets a heavy workout. I have introduced hundreds to OO and you should, too. The only reasons not to switch to OO is that compatibility with the universe and an investment in macros locks one in. Both arguments are short-sighted. The lock-in gets worse, not better, with time. The time is now to switch. 2005 is the year of the great FOSS migration: Linux, Apache, Mozilla, LAMP, OO. This leads to a bright future. That other OS is going nowhere. Those who limit themselves to that other OS will be at an economic disadvantage very soon.

mysterio 01-02-2005 09:20 PM

OpenOffice.org

Ruben2 01-03-2005 04:08 AM

OOo

Sepero 01-03-2005 09:54 AM

MS WordPad???

just kidding.

Carlos Chavez 01-03-2005 10:20 AM

OpenOffice

springdog 01-03-2005 03:57 PM

OOo. The innovater, and the availability and popularity to really take it to M$.

fedetxf 01-03-2005 08:08 PM

I tested the prerrelease openoffice version and it looks really promising. All the other options are less visible and less massive projects.

hutuworm 01-03-2005 08:14 PM

I think Yong Zhong Office's compatibility is better than other opensource competitors.

vectordrake 01-03-2005 08:16 PM

I gotta go with Koffice, as it's come a long way. Its notquite there with .doc support, but soon...

I do like OpenOffice as well, and Abiword is an awesome word processor, but for its size (about1/6 of OoO) and speed, its hard to beat Koffice for features and function. They ALL kick butt!

segphault 01-04-2005 02:51 AM

LaTeX or DocBook with VIM. I wouldnt dream of using anything else.

JSpired 01-04-2005 02:54 AM

OpenOffice.org here.

kartik_mistry 01-04-2005 03:52 AM

I vote for OpenOffice.org ! It's nice to see 1.9x beta !!
1.1.4 is too better than any present Officees..

uman 01-04-2005 07:27 AM

Uh---so what about the java dependancy? That doesn't make it non-free.

chandj 01-04-2005 10:34 AM

some of these categories are no brainers... OO for this one.

q80slipknot 01-04-2005 11:50 AM

hmm....this is kinda hard for me, see i just LOVE OOo's features...but at the same time, i cant resis Koffice's speed!

At the end of the day, i guess OOo would win, sorry KDE-maybe next time!

amilcar 01-04-2005 02:22 PM

There is another and crucial raison for using
OpenOffice and not the gentle Abiword:
The support of Arabic Langage!

Koffice supports as well, so if you can't use OOo for some reason, you can use Kwrite.:)

gargamel 01-04-2005 07:15 PM

A very good package is not in the list:

Textmaker/Planmaker are excellent programs. Fast, small, stable, feature-rich and cross-platform: They are available on Windows, Linux and Pocket PC, and as I know there's even a version for the Zaurus. On Pocket PCs Planmaker ist said to be the only spreadsheet application that can really handle real Excel files --- something the Pocket PC Excel from Microsoft can't do...!!!

I used to like Applixware, as it was (and still is) fast and extremely stable. However, there's no development, it appears, so the future of this good package is uncertain.

Textmaker/Planmaker have all the advantages of Applixware plus an up-to-date look-and-feel and all the usability improvements we all got used to (call them wizards, assistents, helpers, companions or whatever you like --- you know what I mean).

kOffice. A PURE Linux app. Love it.

neenee 01-05-2005 02:29 AM

gnome office here.

Velvet Elvis 01-09-2005 12:51 AM

I use LyX for all my writing and don't really have much use for the other office componets. OOdraw is kinda handy. I use Kword for reading ebooks because it has the best font handling and I really like the plastik KDE style.
