I was googling a lot to figure out what could be happening, but already under the assumption that one of the HDDs I have in a USB dock station was about to fail definitively. In fact, part of my reading was around trying to understand if maybe Linux itself doesn't deal well with this kind of set-up, in ways that could be perhaps more damaging than the normal internal usage of the HDD.
But then I found a piece of information suggesting that maybe what happened was just that the USB...
Qemu still befuddles me at times. It doesn't help when various command line options are deprecated and changes. For qemu-3.xx, there have been some changes to setting up USB passthrough. This all all came to a head when I needed to restore an iphone. The powermac G5 is dismantled at the moment, so I thought, why not use the Windows 10 VM? After letting Win10 grind along updating itself (I don't fire it up very often), I installed itunes (win10 has an "app store"? ugh.), the fun began....

Yes that's right! I kid you not! A marvelous bash script to automatically mount a usb flash drive (or at least set it up to mount it by users) it is commented and should be 'easy' to follow. There are probably better ways to do this, but at the time I didn't want to install anything (e.g. pmount) and I didn't feel like using autofs.
what does the script do if it doesn't automatically mount the drive?
- It determines an appropriate mount name from the file system label or...
