Description: SimplyMEPIS is an easy to install, easy to use, stable, flexible, and reliable desktop operating system. Based on the Debian GNU/Linux software packaging system, SimplyMEPIS 7.0 was based on the Debian Etch project. The upcoming SimplyMEPIS 8.0 release is based on the soon to be released Debian Lenny project, which recently produced its first release candidate for testing and verification.

SimplyMEPIS has been one of my favorite desktop systems since it was first released in 2003. The early releases were called MEPIS. When a desktop environment, based on the KDE (K Desktop Environment) was added, it became known as SimplyMEPIS, and in 2004, achieved visibility by becoming the featured system in a book entitled, "Point and Click Linux" by Robin "roblimo" Miller.

This latest test release is very close to final form, and I find it exceptionally easy to install, very good at detecting and configuring my hardware, capable of functioning correctly with my home wireless network, and free of any serious defects. I have never seen a better test release than this release. Unless you are incredibly intolerant to change, this makes an excellent desktop system, even now, before the official release! The fact that this software can be seamlessly updated when the final release comes out makes this a great time to give SimplyMEPIS 8.0 a try. I intend to keep my copy running on my main systems.

Pros: Stability - Easy to install - Powerful
Cons: Not localisated at install

I used Simply Mepis when the current version was 6.0. but then followed the Kubuntu way. Recently tried the beta of upcoming version (8) only to found that it was stable enough to became my production release.

Fast and easy to configure, heir of the well known Debian virtues. Now it has been installed in the five computers under my control: My Desktop (AMD 64 @ 3GHz, 2GB); my wife's desktop (AMD Athlon 32 @ 2GHz, 1MB); my laptop (intel Centrino @ 1,7 GHz, 1GB); my wife's tiny Acer One 150 (intel Atom @ 1,6 GHz, 1GB) and my office's desktop (intel Dual Core @ 3,5 GHz, 2GB). All them with mixed video cards (intel, nVidia, ATI...) and wireless chipsets. Veredict: Everything working OK, better than with previous flavours of Kubuntu. And of course, KDE 3.5 is a plus over a still not enough mature 4.1.x.

Debian Lenny is going to be very good, but Simply Mepis 8.0 even better.
