Description: A very pleasing lightweight X11 desktop environment that loads quickly with straightforward installation to your hard drive from its LiveCD. All features appeared to work perfectly in a VMware Player VM environment on an ASUS Eee PC 1000H Netbook except for one annoying feature I was unable to resolve: root password was rejected in terminal even though PCLinuxOS Control Center accepted it. Reinstalling PCLOS was unable to fix it so I reluctantly deleted the VM even though I believe this is, otherwise, a great distro. A pity.

Pros: up to date
Cons: flaw in Mandrake Control Center for video cards

In brief, I tested LXDE from December 2010, compared with the newest version, from June 2011, and found that the newer version is slightly faster, by measurement of times recorded with the testing algorithm I have described in the blogs on this site, however, that slight improvement (less than 5% faster with the newer edition) comes at a heavy price:

The famous Mandrake Control Center in the newest LXDE has a flaw: The "test" capability for evaluating video cards has been removed in the version of LXDE from June 2011.

I recommend using the older version, until that problem is resolved....
