External DVD player not being recognized

I am running Zorin 9 64 bit, on an HP Pavillion dv6.Core i5.

I have a generic dvd player/burner that I plugged into my system and at first it was showing up, being mounted and reading what the dvd's were, but everytime I tried to play the movie it would error out and say Could Not Read Disc, which I thought was odd since it read it enough to recognize the title of the movie and listed it as the drive name after reading the disc.

After about three tries it stopped recognizing the drive all together and now I get nothing, even after reboot. This is a generic device, no name anywhere on it or numbers of any kind, and maybe that is the problem but I've never had any problems with it until now, and it looked lke it was working at first.

When I put the dvd directly into the laptop it recognizes it and plays it just fine. So I know it's not the disc.

I've tried VLC Player and every other player that comes with Zorin, but now it won't even show up.

Update: Zorin is now recognizing the external dvd player but still wont play a dvd.
Anyway I get this error: DVDRead could not read block 0.
I have been researching this error and have tried many fixes but so far nothing works.
Most of the fixes look like pkgs that Zorin comes loaded with where as Ubuntu in the past did not.
Like libdvdcss2, which I still tried.

Regionset:
regionset version 0.1 -- reads/sets region code on DVD drives
ERROR: Could not open disc "(null)"!
Please ensure there is a readable CD or DVD in the drive.

I have no dvd in the internal dvd drive, only a dvd in the external dvd drive and regionset is saying there is no disc present, so it must be reading my internal drive.

Any ideas on this would be greatly appreciated.

I tried to play a regular audio cd through this external drive and it did play but was all choppy, cutting in and out the whole time. So not only can I Not play a movie I can't even listen to music with it.

Do you have libdvdread4 and have you run libdvdcss. See the link below, if you've done that, I don't know what else it might be.
