Creating a Custom Keyboard on Zorin OS 9 Lite

This is my first experience with Linux. In Windows, I used the keyboard creator to be able to use the right alt key to type accented characters like ĉ, ĝ, ŭ, and í.

How would I do this in Zorin OS 9 Lite?

This guy... seems to be troubleshooting a similar problem on Zorin.
Generally (and by generally I mean in Slackware) you can customize your keyboard with xmodmap however your "desktop environment" can undo anything you do with xmodmap.
According to what I'm reading, Zorins default desktop environment is Gnome which accesses that functionality by clicking on "system"->"preferences"->keyboard.

It doesn't work.

Based on what I read at Create your own personal keyboard layout, I tried editing "us" file in leafpad in /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols, but I wasn't able to save it.
How would I do that, and keep it from being undone?
