I bought a used laptop to my wife who will use it for browsing, facebooking, use some office programs and printig photoshop files. Basically, that is all.
So I decided to search a windows-ish linux to try, and this is how I found Zorin.
Yesterday, I sucesfully installed Zorin 9. And I think everything is fine, but I couldn't install antivirus software. I googled a lot, I watched some tutorials, and after 4 hours of trying, I couldn't install an antivirus program.
Can anyone help me how to install an antivirus program?
The first two links are specifically for windows so they won't work on Linux. The AVG is a tar.gz download and I could not find a download link for AVG Linux although it states it is there so you might look a little further. Anything you download with an ".exe" extension is windows and won't run on Linux. If you try Clamav use the .deb file for Zorin.
with there being only about 12 to 24 linux viruses ( compared to the 750,000 to 1,500,000 Microsoft viruses
Correction, the number of Windows viruses is estimated over 3,000,000, about one third of them are not known and slip thru anti-virus with ease.
See, virus protection is second line defense. First line is the strength of operating system - first line of defense does not exist in Microsoft world, thus they have to rely on anti-virus.
but then there's all sorts of other protection that antivirus programs offer - malware, spyware, ...
i don't need antivirus on my linux-only cosncious internet user system, but i can see how something like that makes sense for a user totally unconcerned with even the simplest (at least to us nerds) safety precautions.
not sure if clamav offers that sort of protection.
last time i used comodo, and it worked (not as a daemon though, which i guess is what you need)
keep in mind that something like an antivirus on linux will require lots of root privileges.
Yesterday evening, finally I could install ClamAV.
Hi...
Welcome to the forum
If you need to (and haven't already,) you can install ClamTk as a GUI frontend. It might be listed in Zorin's repositories but if not, you can see if one of the packages (or the source) listed on the download page of their website will work.
Also, if you feel this issue is resolved, please mark this thread as "SOLVED" by clicking on "Thread Tools" directly above your initial post. Thanks!

I have one question.. I have Zorin OS 7 on a HP laptop. I got some sort of malware attack on my Chrome browser. A folder icon appeared requesting to install something which I ignored. However since then my OS reports a 'system error' after each login with an option to 'report' or 'cancel'.. So I never report it.. But to whom would the report go..?
I also now get a system message from my Chrome browser that my Zorin OS is too out of date and will no longer receive Chrome upgrades.. But I have a large list of bookmarks which I want to save.. If I upgrade the OS how can I save my Google Chrome browser bookmarks..?
