I didn't realize there was a forum for Zenwalk when I posted this.

All advice appreciated. Edit: I noticed when I went to the distrowatch site
that the download doesn't seem to be available???

Hi,

For clarification ;)

Zenwalk ** IS ** and ** WANT TO BE ** a vanilla Slackware system with very few modifications at system level !

Zenwalk is a small 1GB version of Slackware with many post-install configurations and tunings already done out of the box, with a ready to use polished desktop environment, added graphical system tools, and "one application per task" (in fact : back in the day in 2004, as far as I know Zenwalk has been the first Linux distribution to provide the concept of 1 app/task...).

You could download an original Slackware (or preferably buy a DVD at https://store.slackware.com/cgi-bin/store ), then install the set of Zenwalk packages ("z" serie) on it, then reboot : you would get "exactly" Zenwalk (without the 1 app/task cleanup).

Considering performance, you won't notice much differences between Zenwalk and Slackware : Zenwalk is just a little bit faster to boot (less services, optimized rc scripts) ; and a little bit more responsive (fewer loaded libraries, no Qt (Qt is optional in Zenwalk)).

All the best :)
JP
