installed dwm lost login screen

I installed dwm off of slackbuilds 14.1 then logged out to log into dwm under a user name, my screen went "blank" with just my mouse pointer showing. I rebooted because I did, then when I came back it just booted up to the same screen. I had to switch to a different tty then logged in. ran xwmconfig picked dwm under my user name (not root) and it worked just fine. then I switched to another tty and logged in root and startx xfce4 starts just fine.

what is the login screen name thing and how can I get rid of it, or fix it, or know how to do both?

zenwalk 7.9.3

Yes in the earlier versions of Zenwalk GDM was the default.
