Best distribution: Zenwalk?

I added all the distros in a wiki based software guide and based to user reviews Zenwalk Linux came first , as beeing the best Linux distribution. What do you guys think? Which is the best?

b0uncer 07-09-2007 11:16 AM

The one that suits best - for every different person. Of course there is no grand overall best distribution for everyone; what a Windows idea.

It depends on what you need, want and are ready to do.

EDIT: FLAMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

as b0uncer said. the best distro is the one that suits your needs best and also your hardware.
i personally like slackware.
it is all a matter of taste.

there is no absolute, all is relative.

:)

Zenwalk: #13 and dropping at Distrowatch. Therefore, it cannot possibly be best.

But you like it: Therefore, it is the best.

Pick one......;)

I've been a slacker since I've used Linux, and about a week ago I decided to try Zenwalk to do something new, and I have to say, it's amazing. Now don't yell at me for this, but it seems that it's kind of a halfway mix between Slackware and Debian. It's slackware based, but it has a nice package manager that gets stuff from repositories etc, and is nice and graphical for when I don't feel like mucking about in the command line. I personally like it a lot, kinda like a GUI-based Slackware. So maybe not number one for me, but it comes in a close second :)

Distrowatch will tell you all the stats on any distro. And there is always the Zenwalk web site.

you can't install ZW from liveCD for now (work in progress on this side).

Default install is XFCE only, however kde and gnome are packaged as "extra" DE (installable with netpkg).

I am pretty sure there is no "best distribution"...

Warning: I have been using Slackware since 3.1 so I am biased.

I do like slackware... a lot. I recently figured I would try out some of these slackware alternatives (with a desktop/workstation focus) since I just upgraded from 60gb to 160gb of HD space in my laptop.

So... I downloaded Vector 5.8.6 SOHO and Zenwalk 4.6.1. I tried Vector first and struggled through everything for about 2 days before thinking to myself, "Hey, this should be easier than Slack, shouldn't it?" At that point, I hit the power button (didn't even do a shutdown), fired in the Zenwalk CD and formatted/installed on the old Vector partition.

With Zen, I was close to a full working system out of the box except wireless. I dug around a bit through the documentation before finding the fix, and away I went. Downloaded Nvidia drivers, openoffice, kde... Edited a few of my start up scripts. Removed packages I don't use/care about... Pounded my chest and called it a success.

Now, I can say... I do like Zenwalk... a lot.

Vector had me within inches of taking my own life (not sure why... probably some stupid configuration error on my part), and then Zenwalk taught me that there was hope for slack based distro to successfully focus on end users who will be running it on a desktop/laptop (not as a server).

Not sure if I will stick with Zen over Slack or not, but for now, I am really enjoying it. I will probably always keep Slack on my desktop, but Zen is a real possibility on the laptop.

wow what a live cd

have been using a number of main distros as live cd and recently tried zenwalk 4.8 live.

it is wonderful!!!

fast, stable, easy boot, acts like its working from ram after going for a few minutes--on and on with good features.

just try it!!

since when does distrowatch's rankings correlate with quality?

i too have made the slack->zenwalk switch for my laptop. I like the much smaller footprint vs slack12

Never claimed they did.......What you read (From July) was a feeble attempt at humor.

Since this thread started, Zenwalk has dropped from 13 to 16, thereby proving.................absolutely nothing.

What intrigues me is the continuing high score for PCLOS. This is still my default, but it is not hugely better than--eg Kubuntu, Mepis, etc.

Stable base + slick look + intelligent software choices + easy package manager + Xfce = MY FAVORITE DISTRO!!!!!!!!!!! Xubuntu is also a very good choice but the default panel layout is awful.

and mine was not a flame, but apparently an even feebler attempt and an unecessary dusting off of this thread
