I started getting into linux at the beginning of the year when I attended a linux convention in Michigan.

Tired of M$ and Darth Gates, dreading Longhorn and it's DRM glory, time to make the leap.
Since then I have been playing distro-disco. Here is what I found so far (I have been trying to find that distro that works best for me. What I have been looking for is ease of installation, support (forum or otherwise), resources, & not bloatware like Windows. These are my impressions, no offense intended. Remember, I am noob to linux in general. One of the things that I have been looking at is finding a distro that I can convert people with & that from a base perspective be easy for them to use.
My System Specs:
Shuttle SN45G NForce2-400
AMD XP3200+ w/2x512mb Mushkin lvl 1 pc 3500
Sapphire ATI 9700 Pro 128mb
Samsung SP1614N 160gig
Sony CRX 320 DvD Combo Drive.
And for the record, It doesn't matter the distro, ATI drivers are a pain. Only thru the forums and helpful people was I ever able to get direct rendering working. This is a ATI driver issue, not a Linux problem.

The Disto List
Suse 9.1 - Installed it, couldn't get sound or ethernet. Lost interest after a week, the challenge of frustration overwhelmed me.
Debian & Xandros - pretty much the same as Suse 9.1
MDK10 - One of the more popular distros, I found it to be buggy and bloated. I was trying to get away from bloatware. Between Installation woes and crashes, this distro didn't last long on my system. Other people love it, I found it painful.
Fedora Core 2 - Started in beta with FC2T3 and into final release. I like FC2. A little bloated, mostly because of the lack of options with installer. Great forum support. For the most part a very solid distro. A good newbie distro
Gentoo - Not for the noobie what-so-ever. Compiling from source installation took many hours. Installation can be very tricky, even with the well thought out guide from Gentoo. It would be so much better if you didn't have to write your own bootloader and fstab. The Portage emerge system is the bomb.
Slackware 10 - Installation was a snap and had good options. Package mgt takes a little getting used to. Great support and resources. Not a new-newbie installation. You still have to config x-windows to get a graphical interface.
Yoper v2 - I started playing with it over the weekend. A quick install that is very straight forward and simple to get going. Minimal installation. all things extra must be installed thru a package manager. I am enjoying playing with it and I like what I have found with it so far.
Now I just need to get those d@rn ATI drivers installed and working.
