Yoper

Just thought I would say that Yoper is a really good fast os. Everybody should give this a try.

it would be nice if you weren't forced to use kde initially though.

That would be nice but then they might have trouble fitting it all on one disk

it's good to try out. i personally didn't notice any speed increase on my computer and there are a few quirks in it. other than that it's a pretty functional os. it's pretty amazing that it will install in about 5 minutes and have almost everything you need right out of the box. if you're not into post-install configuration, which on oses like slackware and freebsd can take quite a while with, yoper is good. i personally would just use knoppix or something though.

There are a lot of satisfied linux users which had used almost all the distros there are on distrowatch, but thy have found nothing like yoper. You won't get dissapointed.

It isn't the best distro for networking I recently discovered, but for a stand alone PC this is one hell of an OS. Easy to use, espescially with apt, and it is also incredibly fast. Just expect a couple of quirks in the first few days you use it though.

Heres the link to the excellent interview done on the key developer of yoper, Andreas Girardet.

www.linuxforums.org/news/article-24753.html

It basically says what is going on with yoper at the present and what is the future goals of yoper are.

For our benefit, could you expand on this?

Well I installed NFS-utils, and I still had hours worth of headaches connecting to my server. Also, I couldn't get a server to run on Yoper. I am pretty sure it isn't my fault as I have run servers and clients on Mandrake, Fedora, SUSE, Debian and Slackware and never had problems. Other than that, for a standalone desktop PC, Yoper is way better than every other distribution except SUSE for me. Afer it matures a bit more, I may use it instead of SUSE.

I received many errors, I'll wait till Yoper's next release and try again and if it doesn't work, I'll post back and let you know what the exact error messages are, I don't have it installed right now and I don't want to reinstall it again. I have heard however that they are releasing a server version of Yoper, so hopefully that will fix some problems.

I'm going to try it as soon as I get my new raid HDDs setup, from the sounds of it, it will make an excellent desktop os. I don't like gentoo because it takes so much time to install packages, and slackware is great, but it just doesn't slot in as an everyday desktop.
