Andreas is such a good person for this - he fixed my network (long time back)

I am not strong on network but try
dhcpd
to see if anything comes up

also paste the results of ifconfig here
so people can better assist you

if you have eth0 listed then try
ifconfig eth0 start

again gives us info about how you are connecting to the internet
(fixed IP? dhcp? router / modem) and the results of ifconfig (on its own)

what does: ifconfig say?
what happens if you type: /etc/init.d/networking restart (any messages?)
what is the type of your connection and configuration: dhcp/static?

also make sure your network card driver is loaded (lsmod)
what happens if you run other distros, like Knoppix - does it detect your network?

As mentioned - which card is it? Some ( Via-Rhine II for instance) can be a problem - especially with 2.6 kernels. Often, during boot up, you will see a message stating an error with those cards - easy to sort out, but that may not be your problem. If you do have a via-rhine card - post the info and the fix is easy to do :-)
There was mention of firewire ports being detected as network cards on another thread - do you have firewire?
The output from ifconfig would be useful ( simply open a shell and type it in - then press enter )
