XFree86 4.3 is "spinning", looks like a tornado

I have a feeling hsync is at a wrong setting.

The screen is freaky messed up. Whenever I "startx", it will start up, and the first thing I see is the Window manager menu. Problem is, all the pixels are flying around like nothing else. Let me try to explain.

If you took 4 screenshots, and then layered them on each other so that #1 started at the left side of the screen, #2 started a fifth of the way across the screen, #3 started 2 fifths of the way across the screen, etcetera, etcetera, then had each horizontal line on the screen sway back and forth at high speeds, you might see what I am looking at. It's awful.

I just tried re-installing VL, it didn't help. I'm going to try a different monitor now.

The new monitor worked! Ihave no idea why, though, except that it's a different monitor.
