I have used menuconfig (make menuconfig) under Deb, and now that I'm trying Vector, I have a few hardware problems I need to fix. I bet I can use menuconfig, but what folder does it sit in? I remember I had to go somewhere like /usr/sbin or something, but do not remember where it was.
it isn't anywhere. the make binary would be in /usr/bin but you would typically run that command in the directory of your kernel source. you sound like you don't realise that that would be used to totally rebuild your kernel...?
I remember asking the question of where the list for sound drivers are (under the Debian forum, I was having trouble with sound under Debian, but I don't see the thread now), and my directions were to go to some folder and type "make menuconfig", which gave me what I was wanting, but didn't give me the exact driver I was after. I'm trying to replicate that (and hopefully use this menu to manually configure my sound driver).
it should be the same - I'm talking about the make menuconfig only!
This command is used to configure your kernel-source before you build a new kernel - with drivers you want/need and select in make menuconfig.
For this you need to have the kernel-source installed - it is always under /usr/src and there should be a link to your kernel-source called "linux"
ls -l /usr/src shows what is there
you go to /usr/src/linux and issue: make menuconfig
You need to download the kernel source to use make menuconfig. It isn't included with vector (or most distributions). However, Chris is right, we'd be a lot more help if you could tell us what card you're using.
If you don't know what card it is type the following in a terminal
/sbin/lspci
