I used to. Sorry if I can't be of any particular help but I used VL a while back and that kernel version jumps out at me. I used it an an ancient laptop. Strongly suggest you try to upgrade the kernel though.

i use 2.6.x kernel that came with vector...
alsa works.

alsa worked on my i586, slackware 11 with 2.4.33 kernel...why it shouldn't work on VL with 2.4.29 ?

i switched to slack - alsa works out of box

it works out of box with VectorLinux too !
