Installing adobe flash in Vector 5.8 Std.
 

So my daughter prefers to use Vector(5.8 Standard) but the version of Adobe Flash is somewhat out of date in Vector's version of Firefox. So I go to the Adobe flash site and download the tar version since Vector does not like the RPM.

I follow the Adobe install instructions which assume that if you are using Linux and compiling a tar ball then you must know what you are doing. They give you the commands to compile the source file but you have to navigate to the directory which the tar ball creates when you untar the file. (Navigating the file system in a terminal is not my strong point.) However I did succeed in finding the required folder and typing in the command to compile the file.

....error can not compile the file glibc is missing.

So I fire up Slaptget and check to see if glibc is installed and up to date. It was there and it was up to date. So I think let me update glibc anyway just to see if that will change anything. So I go to update the sources list...Slaptget informs me the sources are no longer valid. Ok so I spend several minutes updating the sources list just so I can update file that I already have that is technically up to date. Finally I connect to a valid source and D/L and install glibc again.

Then I go back to the terminal and re-issue the compile command and Flash is now compiled and ready to use in Firefox.

Once it was installed in worked fine but it is just a lot of work to do something that in Windows is rather trivial but in Linux is a reasonable challenge.

I suppose the command to install flash was something like ./flashplayer-installer. When I issued it, the terminal told me that the package has no description and... that was it. Flash wasn't working. I had to copy libflsh.so (again, I might be wrong with filenames) from untarred tarball to /usr/lib/mozila/plugins directory. And if you use Opera you'll have to change plugins path to that folder. Funny thing is that flash still doesn't work on some sites. When I ceck those sites with Windows, flash loads and works just as it is intended.

Adobe has to make due work in this regard.

Actually, I do not believe Adobe can do much about the process, because Vector is a Slack based distro and Slack uses Tar files instead of "packages" to install programs. My compliant is that the required library was installed but generated an error stating that it was missing when it was not.
