hibernation?

Just wondering if there is anyway to suspend linux (e.g. send it into hybernation) and then make it wake on LAN? My system actually has a BIOS function to accomplish this task, but It doesn't seem to want to work (probably due to operator inability...lol).

Now, before anyone asks....the machine I want to do this on is one that I'm using as an in house server. I just want to have it power down until someone connects to it via ftp.

thanks in advance
btw....im running Vector, a slackware clone

Suspend/hibernation is still an issue with ACPI under Linux. There's still no easy way to get it fixed.

Wow! Thanks for the reply. It only took a year to get it..lol. I don't even use Linux anymore. Got a bit tired of trying to hack the shit out of it every time I needed something like this done. I learned a lot from the experience though. Mainly that if you want to get something accomplished, do it on a Windows machine. If you want to sit around all day trying to get something get something accomplished, do it on a Linux machine. It's just that simple.

Still coming to a Linux forum though, huh?

Just to be fair you did not post the hardware specs on your machine. So you can only really expect to get a general answer.

You may have better luck with FreeBSD

I disagree. Sure, Linux takes a little longer to set up, but after that, I can be more productive than on Windows. All the software runs fine and no need to constantly fire up my adware scanner. Besides, you don't want to be comparing yourself to the members of linuxsucks.org, do you? :p

Um, no smart ass. Let me break it down for you. I use to be a member of this forum. As a member of this forum I received email notifications when someone commented on one of my posts. When angryfirelord commented on this particular post I received an email. Was that simple enough for you to understand?

Just to be fair, I really don't give a shit. Personally neither does the hardware on my machine. Let me ask you something. Does it make you feel like more of a man to post useless comments on year old threads? Huh? Is your dick really that fucking small? What interests me the most about Linux and its zealot cult community is the fact that you can't get a straight answer to a simple fucking question without having to dig through hours of smart ass remarks and flame posts. You're all like a bunch of godamn overzealous Pentecostals out to change the world. Let me give you all a quick reality check....it's a fucking operating system! That's all it is. It's a piece of computer software that makes a piece of computer hardware work. Thats it. Nothing more.

My suggestion is that you all get girlfriends, or maybe a fucking job. Put into the system like the rest of us, drink a Godamn beer and get laid for fuck's sake. Do something with your useless lives besides sitting around all day arguing over something as meaningless as an operating system. Or just fucking kill yourselves. No one really gives a fuck either way.

Jeez, SOR-RY. First of all, labeling the linux comminuty a cult and its users zealots is an insult to the people who work on the project. Sounds like your insecure with your Windows operating system, so you have to bash someone else. How about actually trying to solve problems instead of giving up?

Then why are you arguing? If it means nothing to you, then don't say anything.

Wow. Somebody needs a hug! Crazed_Mofo, that was waaaay out of proportion for the extremely mild flaming you received. If you are being bothered by responses (and I'd guess that post#2 was an attempt to get this thread out of the zero replies lists), you can opt out of them in your user control panel. It's been a while since you were last here, so you had probably forgotten about this. Since this thread is so old and derailed, I have now closed it.
