Xubuntu, graphical glitches

Hey,

I'm using a Lenovo SL510 with Intel Mobile series 4 integrated graphics. I have had Xubuntu installed on my machine for a little less than a year.

Firstly, half a year back minor graphical glitches started to appear; when a window was opened there would sometimes be a thin dotted line attached to one of the window borders which would disappear if I would resize the window.

Then about a month ago, I think that after updating the system (but I'm not so sure anymore) more annoying glitches started happening. When I would browse the internet there some single letters in the text would be disfigured, have strange artifacts or would not show at all, but the display would go back to normal if I went and selected/highlighted the text. Same problem occurrs in Libreoffice, where single letter in some words would disapear or have strange artifacts but would then disappear if I would zoom-in, put a an empty space in the text or do seomthing else to force the DE to redraw the screen.

Anyway, it is pretty annoying and I don't really know what to do. Has anybody experienced anything like this or does anyone know how this issue can be fixed?

Also, I found out that the glitches are also present if I use i3 WM, although they at first sight seem less frequent.

I know now what it was, if this might be a help to anyone that faces similar issues. The culprit for the glitches lies in the new accelearation mode that is applied in the new drivers, where SNA (SandyBridge's new accelearation) replaces UXA (Unified Accelearation Architecture). This can apparently cause problems on older cards and the soution is to reinstate the UXA acceleration method. Now as far as ubuntu is concerned, I do not know where the relevant configuration fiels are, but I was able to solve the problems in my Manjaro install by following these instructions: Arch Wiki

If anyone has an idea where the relevant conf files are for other distros, please post, so that others with older hardware will be able to resolve these issues. Then we can really mark the thread as solved

so far, i haven't noticed any glitches anymore.
it's hard to be 100% sure though - i think disabling the testing repos and downgrading a few packages also helped.
