xubuntu doens’t launch GUI ???

hello !!
i am a newbie and i want to install xubuntu alternate on an old computer (500MHz 320Mo ram) : install seems ok but there is no gui loaded . I only have to login in a black screen and when i’m logged in , i don’t know what to do ...
when i type startx -> command not found
when i type startxfce4 -> command not found
when i type sudo apt-get install xfce4 -> it doens’t find anything ??
when i type sudo apt-get install gdm -> neither keyboard nor mouse work in gdm ??
i chose linux generic kernel when installing on a 4 GB ext2 partition ...
well i give up if no one can help me ...

You could get a full distro on that spec PC.

Any chance of some additional information? Do you know what graphics card the machine has?

If you installed from the alternate CD, you may have skipped the gui.

Type:

Quote:
sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop
That should get you going.
