Xubuntu char set support (pound sign)

I have a stack of php code, some written on windows and some on debian sarge - but all of it written and uploaded to a source repository via eclipse.

My issue is that when I check out the code to my Xubuntu machine via eclipse, all the pound signs have turned into a solid diamond with a question mark in the middle. I can search/replace all these with pound signs, but that's not really the solution is it, and anyway there are also other characters (letters with accents for instance) that get turned into the same symbol.

I notice that when i type the pound sign into vi on the Xubuntu machine, I get a control type character in front of the pound sign - it's like a capital A with an accent.

Probably a pretty simple setting, but I'm struggling. I am definitely a newbie but the "read this before posting" on the newbie forum sent me here as it's distribution specific. Any help much appreciated!

Ta

Hey, go into your
/etc/X11/xorg.conf

and change the line in "InputDevice" called "XbdLayout" to gb:

Code:
Section "InputDevice"
    Identifier "Generic Keyboard"
    Driver "kbd"
    Option "CoreKeyboard"
    Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
    Option "XkbModel" "pc104"
    Option "XkbLayout" "gb"
EndSection
