xrdp keys not working

I'm trying to configure my server for rdp connections. I'm running Ubuntu 14.04. I have also tried this with other versions of Ubuntu and get the same results.

One of the simplest installations (of the many I have tried) is to install xrdp, then a clean desktop environment like "mate".

Then place the desired session in "~/.xsession"... in this case "mate".

The connection from rdesktop or from a Windows Remote Desktop client works except for the following in every case.

Some of the keys won't work. The lower case "l" doesn't work. Also the "ENTER" key doesn't work.

Any one have any suggestions on how to rectify this?

Thanks.
