XMMS streaming with shoutcast problem

My friend is a dj and wants to stream music via his xmms player into shoutcast servers. Im also intrested as how to accomplish such a feat. Im goin to paste his question here in hopes that more ppl view it..as on the other forums hes not getting any answers.

Code:
Hello all,

Sorry if this is posted in the wrong place, I became a linux convert about 24 hrs ago.

I am a DJ, I have been using Winamp and the Shoutcast plug-in to broadcast live sets, using the line-in on my sound card (sound blaster live).

I am now on ubuntu 6.06 dapper

I have installed XMMS and the liveice plug-in (1.0.0.6). I have added the correct address/port/password to the plug-in. I am able to enable the plug-in. I am then able to play an mp3, using XMMS. However, I am not able to work out:

1.) How it connects to the internet - does clicking on enable = connect?
2.) Can I somehow tell XMMS to read from the line-in on my sound card?

I have monitored out-going traffic using firestarter and there is no activity relating to XMMS - even if the plug-in is enabled.

Can anyone offer me some n00b advice please?

I'm not a audio person, but I can you this:

1. Firestarter is a firewall application not a traffic monitoring tool. If you have Firestarter running then you need a rule to allow access on the address/port you specified that your stream will be playing on. (ie...Allow incoming/outgoing connections/communications on that port.)

2. If you want to monitor the actual traffic you will use Wireshark or Ethereal or if you're really in it for command line then tcpdump.

3. If you want to see if the port you specified in your setup is open then you can use nmap and scan your computer/ip address you specified.

Well, he could try Icecast, which is open source and very similar to Shoutcast, it even performs better, less memory and cpu usage. Here is a complete guide:
http://www.howtoforge.com/linux_webr...icecast2_ices2
and the icecast site at http://www.icecast.org/
