I'm a huge fan of Ubuntu 5.04; I can't wait for 5.10 next month.
A small question. I really like XFce. Does Ubuntu offer other DEs besides Gnome? Ubuntu 5.04 with Gnome is running fine on my Plll 667 IBM.
I'd just like to try something different. I run XFce4 on my Slackware 10.2 box.
I looked at the Synaptic repositories and couldn't see XFce.

XFce4 is in the repository, I am installing it now on Breezy Badger...odd I would run across this question while actually installing the thing you are asking about. Just finished installing and XFce works quite nicely.

Edit: Fluxbox 0.9.12-1build1 is also in the repository. As are Enlightenment, fvwm95, fvwm2, ctwm, twm, vtwm, blackbox, KDE, sawfish, window maker, afterstep, olvwm, icewm, aewm, aewm++, wm2...I will stop there There are a lot of Window Managers available and all the major DEs.

Okay, I'm an idiot.
I've looked everywhere in the Synaptic Package manager, and Add/Remove software.
I can't seem to locate all the DEs you've mentioned. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could tell me what section of Synaptic XFce, Flux is in? Thank you for your patience.

I'm tacking on to this thread since I've been through the same events posted here. but I'm still getting the Gnome login screen. One 'howto' said I need to create a .Xsession file and start Xfce from there. Well I've already got a .Xsession, but it's blank...

So I've browsed every config file that might have something to do with it, but can't find the place where somebody says "ok, start Gnome now".

As far as I know, Xfce was sucessfully installed. I even have a couple xfce apps in my Gnome menus.

Where do I go to find out what happened? I'm running Ubuntu Hoary 5.04--with all updates installed.

To get rid of the pesky GDM (Gnome Login Screen), I found one of two ways. My solution was to simply remove it from the /etc/init.d/xdm ... xdm has a bunch of lines which are responsible for loading the display manager, in this case, GDM. That is also the other method of removing it, edit the xdm script to not load a display manager. Although, I believe removing or modifying the name of xdm is easier, a bit less beautiful, but it works just the same.

On Gentoo, I don't know if it is true of Ubuntu, you can also remove xdm from starting up by modifying the sequence with something like this Good luck!

Ok, thanks! I'll go re-read the info on logging in with X, display managers, window managers, and desktops, because I think I'm off track a bit. (I was thinking I could change the desktop environment without changing the window manager.) Previous distros I've tried made it easy to change the desktop environment--even Slackware was a cinch--so it's a surprise that in Ubuntu, of all distros, it is not so easy.

Ah, you just want to change the window manager. The buttons on the side or bottom of GDM give you the option of which WM you want to load after logging in.

Ok, everything is good -- I found it in Gnome's 'Sessions' button. Works fine.
