XFCE dial up problem

Hi, I'm new to Linux. I have just installed Xubuntu with Xfce. Everything seems to work OK but I cannot configure a dial up connection. I have an external 56k modem. I went through the network set up and wasn't sure which port (there being no Comm 1 to choose from) so choose /modem. Anyway, after configuring I could no find no icon to connect. I guess I've got a lot to learn. Thanks.

RoadyM,

This ain't pretty, but it might work.

1) Open 'Device Manager' and make sure your external modem was detected on Com1 and a driver was installed. If not, contact the manufacturer to see if they provide a Linux-compatible driver. Once a driver has been installed,

2) Open Synaptic Package Manager and search for a dial-up manager. After installation, it will need to be configured manually to your ISP's specifications, including the service connection phone number. The dial-up manager's icon is what you need to click to connect, once everything is installed and configured properly.

A much easier route would be to use cable or DSL.

Ref. Samotnik's post. To get accurate help, you really need to provide specifics on your external modem, as there's a lot of htem out there.

The chances of the manufacturer offering Linux drivers, are between zero and no chance in hell.

Your best bet(as Samotnik suggested above) is probably to try Linmodems.org and see if that helps any...

Cable/DSL is better for many reasons, but it is definitely easier to set up Linux with this sort of connection. When I had an Internal modem, most of my Linux trysts would end up in frustration. Unfortunately for some, High Speed isn't an option though.

[QUOTE=dragonslayer48dx]RoadyM,

Thanks for that, I'll check it out. I'm curently here via Puppy Linux operating out of Ram. It used a program called GK dial which was easy to set up and worked straight away. Unfortunately I don't think Xubuntu has it installed (or I couldn't find it)

IndyGunFreak;

"The chances of the manufacturer offering Linux drivers are between zero and no chance in hell."

I must beg to differ. While this may be true for older devices, and maybe still most devices, times are changing for the better. My latest purchase, an ethernet card nearly a year ago, included the Linux drivers on diskette. Hence my suggestion to check it out.

RoadyM;

Others may have more accurate information. I just try to help when someone hasn't received any replies for a while. Maybe I shouldn't.

Good luck, and Happy New Year!
