X Server will not die! (Ubuntu Hardy)
Hi Guys,
I tried running /etc/init.d/gdm stop. Some times it says gdm[6826]: WARNING: GDM already running. Aborting! GDM already running. Aborting! Sometimes it brings up a blue screen, and claims a terminal is busy, and actually adds an Xserver. root@ten:/etc/init.d# ps -ea | grep "X" 5702 tty8 00:00:01 Xorg 6333 tty9 00:00:10 Xorg 7026 tty10 00:00:00 Xorg I tried Crtl+Alt+Backspace, which stopped the Xserver, but then the Xserver restarts. After trying this about six times the a message pops up saying, "The display server has been shut down about 6 times in the last 90 seconds. It is likely something bad is going on. Waiting two minutes before trying again on display :0." or something like that. I tried kill -9 #### and it restarted also. By the way, I can not restart in rescue mode, my solution must be at term level 3. Thanks for you help. God Bless You, Grae Cullen |
Simplest solution is probably to hack up your own inittab - for Hardy that probably means creating one.
(Edit:) In my case I just picked an unused runlevel. |
