X-Server Upgrade Problems
Hi,
I have Ubuntu 6.06 installed about a month ago and everything worked fine until I checked for updates and after installing one of the X-server core common update my X-Server does not work anymore.
The error message I get is as follows:
"Failed to start the XServer...It is unlikely that it is not set up correctly"
and at the end of the message the folowing is displayed:
(EE) No devices detected
Failed Server Error:
No screens found
Is there a way to revert back to the previous version of the xorg.conf file prior to the installed update?
If not, can you please help me?
Thanks in advance,
Hansi
I have a NVidia GeForce FX GO5700 graphics card.

A temporary fix was mentioned in a couple posts down from here (I'm too new to post the URL apparently ):
When you get to the text console type "sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-core=1:1.0.2-0ubuntu10"
To reboot after the downgrade type sudo shutdown -r now

apparently the version just before update was xserver-xorg-core=1:1.0.2-0ubuntu10 the update which crashes ubuntu is xserver-xorg-core=1:1.0.2-0ubuntu10.3 and a new fix is xserver-xorg-core=1:1.0.2-0ubuntu10.4
by now I would sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-core=1:1.0.2-0ubuntu10

Thanks
Hi rinonapo and Burnspot,
Thanks for the information. Indeed it was a faulty xserver core upgrade that caused the problem. Ubuntu made an upgrade available almost immediately.
Took me 5 hours to finally realize that it was not my mistake .

hansi

Had same problem today--took me about 8 hours to find solution in this forum--but, had to use windows to view the forum! For the future, is there another way to view the forum and to get latest update.

Hi Harold,
This is exactly how I did it:
You can download the update/ upgrade files on Windows from the URL posted in the forum (e.g. Ubuntu forum) and save them on a USB flash drive or burn them on a CD. You can then access the downloaded files from the Linux console.

You don't need X to browse the web, just install "lynx" package.
It's a text console web browser

Thanks for suggestion. I did some looking inre Lynx and decided it looked a bit too much for me at this time.
Did add "elinks" to my Ubuntu installation, but having trouble getting past the sign-in and enter password step--keeps telling me wrong password. Am using same password used to get mail at sbcglobal.net. Would there be a different password for "elinks"?
So far, have not found much (any?) help inre "elinks"

I just installed elinks to check it out, and I had no problem signing in with my username and password.
As for as help with elinks goes, you can try "elinks --help" and "man elinks"
Also this is getting a bit off topic now
