X problem on Ubuntu 6.10 -- No screens found error

Hey,

I just finished an install of ubuntu 6.10 on my laptop. Getting it installed was one problem, the cd wouldn't install on one computer, so I had to swap harddrives and then install, then reswap.

I'm having a problem with the X server. The boot goes smoothly until it tries to load the X window system, then I get error messages. I recieve the general "No screens found" error, and below that for the more techinal error I get the "No devices detected" error. I've gone to the wiki http://wiki.x.org, and this hasn't helped, it gives an overview of the solution, but nothing specific.

Any thoughts as to how I might be able to fix this?
--Preferably without a network connection, all I have is dialup for the next month or so as I move...

Thanks

Your trouble is because you swapped the computers the hard drive was in. Naturally, all the periferals are in the wrong place... you installation is for a different computer!

I note you do not say what kind of laptop you tried to install on, or what kind of computer you managed to install to before swapping the drives.

Anyway - X is telling you that the driver specified in xorg.conf dosn't run the screen you have - so what driver is this? What video-card is this?

You can check screens with

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep PCI:\*

Tell me what it says.

Of course, you could try to reconfigure xorg with:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

I ran: sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Everything seems to be working great!

Thank you.

I'm relatively new to linux, I've used live cds for about 2 years or so for reading media and editing text doc.s on the go.

Thanks again
