I've got Ubuntu 6.10, with gnome obviously, and for some reason now some programs won't load.
When I try to run updates, or add/remove programs, it will just reset/rescan and not install any of the checked programs. So I thought maybe I needed to be in root, but for some reason root dosen't have a password so I try to go to "users and groups" and it says it is starting it in the taskbar but then it closes and never opens the gui. So I tried to do it the old fashioned way but the same thing happens with the terminal, says its starting at the bottom, but then just closes.
Obviously some programs work, I'm using firefox and all my networking is working. But for some reason these programs won't load. Also the whole system seems to run really slow, any ideas?

Ok I looked at the system log and when I try to open "users and groups" I'm getting an error like this
