When i try installing either of these i get a "you don't have binutils installed" message, so i grabbed binutils, now i get a gcc error message stating the kernal version is something or other, everything is updated all the way why won't it let my install these drivers?

Question Nvidia drivers

I just used :

sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx

had no probs. running xubuntu64 with 32bit emulation and opengl support too. have you tried this ? is there a specific reason why your trying to use drivers from nvidia's website ?

I have some instructions for installing Nvidia Drivers on Ubuntu Here.

You can either do it using apt-get, or synaptic.

I hope this helps

Ian,

I followed your instructions which are not too dissimilar to the BinaryDriverHowTo/Nvidia, but I'm having a small problem.

When I reboot the system after following the instructions, the Nvidia logo boot screen splash does show up which apparently indicates successful driver installation. However, when the system loads the login screen, the video card fan slows down momentarily (this is good, because it shows me that the drivers are now taking care of the fan control in relation to temperature) but no more than a second or two after I login, the video card fan spins up to full speed again as if I hadn't installed the drivers at all.

Would you know what could be causing this?

Max: I have no idea. There are a few results that google finds, but none of them have actually been resolved. I guess that it is just a driver issue, and will hopefully be fixed in due course by Nvidia. I don't have that problem, because my Nvidia gfx card is the cheapest, so it has no fan...

Thanks for your reply. I managed to control the fan noise by editing the xorg.conf -- It was by sheer luck as the info I was following had nothing to do with my actual problem, but I decided to fiddle with it anyway and it paid off. Now, I have no idea exactly how it affected the fan, but I'll post my prodcedure in case someone else is having the same problem as I did.

in the xorg.conf and under Section "Module" I commented out, Load "dri" and Load "GLcore" (eg. #Load "dri") -- Lastly, in Section "Device" I changed Driver "nv" to Driver "nvidia" -- from what I've found out through google, this last step is quite a common problem with drivers not working.

Like I said, I don't know how commenting out "dri" and "GLcore" fixed things, but it worked for me so please make a backup of your xorg.conf before making changes as I can't say for sure if this is a universal solution or if it's just a fix for my type of card, which is a 7800GT.
