Unfortunately, I cannot tell from your question whether you are having problems getting Wine to install or to run. If it did not install properly or is not running because the install did not go well, you might want to try reinstalling everything in case something went wrong with your process. For the record and so everyone is on the same page, here are the instructions I have seen for Ubuntu and other Debian distributions:

ok, well in reply, the installation is bog standard with the addtion of nvidia drivers done in accordance to the Ubuntu wiki

the error itself comes up when wine is installed, nto while installing it. it only happens when i try to actualy run any windows executable, then the terminal fills up like this:

err:imagelist:ImageList_ReplaceIcon no color!
err:imagelist:ImageList_ReplaceIcon no color!
err:imagelist:ImageList_ReplaceIcon no color!
err:imagelist:ImageList_ReplaceIcon no color!
Application tried to create a window, but no driver could be loaded.
The X11 driver is missing. Check your build!

The X11 driver is missing. Check your build!

the install of wine is bog standard, as is ubuntu, no problems

and just for the record, before nvidia drivers, i did the wiki-install of modem drivers..
shoudldnt affect it but thought i might..
cheers

Not everything runs in Wine. Actually, only a few applications run perfectly in Wine. It is still considered beta. Repetitive errors when trying to run a Windows executable with Wine reveal setup, configuration, missing files, and other problems that need to be addressed. The troubleshooting process is involved--and will remain so for any applications that are not popular or have not yet been thoroughly troubleshot. My best guess would be to go through the troubleshooting process as outlined in the Wine HowTo.

Yes, it would. If you are seeing errors after typing winecfg, there is a problem with your wine installation. This command should launch a GUI-type window.

Errors after typing wine notepad.exe would indicate that there are problems with running notepad in wine due to configuration problems, etc.

Of course, if you are seeing errors in the first one, you will always get errors for the second one. Wine needs to be installed correctly before you can take the next step.

just a quick update

Re-installed from scratch using default options, now it works fine..

Q: does it matter the order you install wine and your graphics drivers?
