Wine and Printer Driver?
I have Ubuntu 6.06. I also have a CANON i320. Which of course there is no drivers for it, unless you use TurboPrint for Linux. Which I have no intentions to purchase, I think there are drivers out there, it is a matter of seek and find.
But.....I was thinking about this and a light bulb came on. So the question arose from the fog of thought.
Can you use Wine to install Printer Drivers for a Canon i320?
Right away the thought is, no. But then again has anyone tried this, or at least figure out a way to do it? Also has anyone decompiled the Turboprint script, and if you know which program would do that, let me know. The linux community for me is about sharing technology and not profitting from it.
I have tried Mandrake, wasn't bad, went to Fedora Core 4/5, it had its bugs, didn't mind it. But after careful research have found Ubuntu to be the best experience of all. My first expereince with Ubuntu was frustrating, but rebuilt a machine from scratch, soley dedicated to a Linux system, stayed away from the dual boot desktop. Spent the time to actually learn what I am applying.
I do have a printer and a HP Deskjet Scanner which are the next 2 periphels to implement.
Thank for all the help.

Of course you can install (Windows) printer drivers with Wine because they are pieces of software like anything else, but as far as I know, it's no use -- Wine won't use them. Wine handles printers it's own way, and generally you can use printers with it either by using CUPS (printers supported by CUPS should automagically 'just work') or lpr. There might be more to that, and I know Wine's website has documentation/FAQ answers about this at winehq.org so check there. I remember earlier I was curious and didn't believe them, did install some HP drivers and found out there was no use; mainly just because Wine is not Windows, it just makes the software believe so and this doesn't include Windows printer drivers, I'm afraid.
Your best option would be to get a CUPS printer driver for your model, get it work with CUPS (which stands for Common Unix Printing System, if you didn't already know that -- you did, did you?) and then just try if it works trough Wine. A word of warning, though: even if your printer works with CUPS and it works with some programs run trough Wine, it doesn't mean that your printer worked in every program run trough Wine -- I've faced multiple programs this far that just didn't work with my very common HP printer, though some did.
Refer to winehq.org documentation.

I understand; If it's any consolation, I'm in the same boat, now in the market for a new printer.
Some kindly people pointed me here:
http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/O.../DatabaseIntro
You will find all sorts of resources: a list of drivers, a classification on how well a certain printer works, and resources for those purchasing new printers. Maybe it's time to ebay the printer if you can't return it. Maybe someone with windows can use it.
If the CUPS suggestion that BOuncer gave you doesn't work out, I hate to say it but it looks like you ended up with a paperweight, too. Here's the printer page for your model:
http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_pr...num=Canon-i320
It's possible you saw that already. In any case, I'm sorry for your predicament. It's a pain in the kiester for sure.

The program recognizes the printer, it is listed there, but will not work.
I tried Cups and it will not work either.
Turbo Linux works, but someone suggested that it was not a great investment at all. If someone could make a driver for the printer, than surely some else has also created the same or similar driver, how hard is it to do.
I have checked the sites mentioned, but being optimistic, hoped that someone had resolved the issue. I was hoping to find out what printer the i320 replaced or was created from,(generation version), so that I would try that printer driver instead.
You never know until you try.
Thanks for the help!

Hm. This could be the problem: Canon joined the Microsoft Windows Rally program. If you'd like to see the details, check under news on the left side of the page, first item:
canon.com/
Since I'm catching the sense that windows seeks a certain amount of exclusivity in its business strategies, that could be the problem. Be that as it may, I'll keep checking to see what else I can find out in regards to getting a proper driver for you.
