will only boot in "recovery"

Computer will not boot in normal mode, but if use "recovery" mode and then follow command prompts works fine. Notice if I try to shut down when booting in normal mode that the lettering on screen is extra large and that it will then run a few commands and then turn off, but this is only after I hit power switch first.

did you make changes to the filesystem?

reiserfs ? (change the file checking tool in that case)

kernel upgrades?

version of Ubuntu is 8.04, only changes that I had made is that I had installed some kde programs to try and see what kde was like, installed both kde and kde 4, but then went back and removed them all. Not sure of what you mean by "reiserfs ? (change the file checking tool in that case)"

no changes in any hardware.
Appreciate you assistance

What command prompts ??? - post them here (with your answers).
Also any unusual/warning messages.

Post the output from "du -hT" so we can tell what filesystems you have (i.e. if you are using reiser for example).

When I enter "du -hT" in terminal I get an error saying that "T" is invalid, and if I run it without the "T" it then makes a super large readout? What am I doing wrong?

Sorry - my fault. Should be "df -hT"

I am having this exact problem. I am currently running kubuntu 8.04. I upgraded it from gutsy using a manual at the ubuntu forums. Very simple. But if i don't use the recovery mode for any of the kernels installed, the hard drive led just turns on and nothing happens. On the other hand, using recovery mode for any of the kernels in the grub menu list, i come to the recovery menu, where i select resume normal boot, and i get to kubuntu's desktop normally.

What's going on?

That is o.k., but is only incidental.
You need to look at the messages scrolling by before you get the recovery options menu for any errors/warnings. Most of those should be available afterwards - but not all.
Try "dmesg | less" from a terminal after you get logon.

I think your problem is due to the custom kernel (see the ubuntu forums... I think there were related threads). Upgrade your kernel to the latest one.

Best

Hi, i just performed what you suggested, and the same thing happens with the new 2.6.24-17 kernel. 2.6.24-16 boots only choosing recovery mode, and 2.6.24-17 does the same thing. They just go directly into a dark screen and the hard drive just seems to jump into an infinite activity that leads to nothing, the hd drive just stays permanently on.

I'll check the forums, see what i can find.

Like i have stated in previous posts, 2.6.24-16 boots only choosing recovery mode, and 2.6.24-17 does the same thing. There is a third kernel installed, 2.6.22-14; this one boots normally without the recovery mode option. I suppose this is a problem with the 2.6.24 kernel. Please keep in mind that i upgraded from gutsy, following the graphical instructions. They went down pretty smoothly, but ended up with a few things wrong after reboot.

Thanks for the help, hope we can get this thing fixed soon.
