Who starts dbus and gvfsd?
 

Hello all,

I want to use an alternative window manager for Ubuntu (stumpwm, for the curious), but I also want to be able to use tools like Nautilus. I've been searching around for the script or configuration that launches daemons like dbus and gvfsd, which are running under GNOME, because I want to put their invocations in my .xsession file. However, I cannot find where these programs are launched from. Does anybody know from whence these daemons are started, so that I can copy that approach in my own startup script?

(Note: perhaps I'm going about this in the wrong way, but it seems that using my own .xsession is the simplest approach. I do not want to run certain core GNOME components, e.g. gnome-panel, but I do want GNOME programs [like Rhythmbox and Nautilus] that I intend to run under my other window manager to be able to use e.g. dbus and gvfsd.)

dbus is started with a bootscript on every distro I've used. I'm using pre-2.22 GNOME components so I don't have gvfs. I would guess that the session manager starts the gvfs daemon, but ...?

I use XFCE mostly, but use Nautilus instead of Thunar which is similar to what you want to do. I don't start the gnome-vfs daemon explicitly in any script. Nautilus may initiate the daemon, but again ...? I'd just give it a try and see if it works without explicitly starting gvfsd.
