Where can I find a list of detected hardware, and where it is mounted in Kubuntu?
 

I've just installed Kubuntu (latest build), and cannot find out where my modem is mounted, meaning that I cant connect to the internet with it. Where can I find out where my USB modem is mounted?

Also, how do I activate resolutions higher than 640x800?

first problem i can't really help with, please list your modem and we can see what to do from there.

Second problem has been covered numerous times here and at ubuntuforums, but here it is anyway. Basically, you need to edit a file called /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Easy way using shell (don't be scared!)

backup original file: cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf2

then use nano or vim to edit the file...

sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Then go down the page until you find a subsection with a bunch of resolutions listed. Add in your desired resolution. To save in nano, hit ctrl-o and then ctrl-x to exit. Make sure you back up the original file first!

It's an Alcatel USB broadband modem, and Kubuntu knows that it's attatched (It's listed under the USB devices in the Systems information), but I dont know where it mounts to, /dev/(/dev/ is the only directory KPPP dialer can use a modem from) doesnt show any USB devices (even though my keyboard and mouse are USB!) Eek!

I tried and failed to get the the Alcatel aka Thomson SpeedTouch ADSL broadband modem to work in Mandrake, Ubuntu and Knoppix.

In general they can all recognise the device, but due to license restrictions do not come with the firmware which has to be transfered into the modem each time you use it. Despite getting the firmware, I was unable to get this to work, despite several days of trying, with two computers and multiple flavours of unix.

Good luck - I gave up and bought an ADSL router off ebay instead, which is now working fine :)

i went the ethernet modem route then later got a 4 port ethernet router
that was the only way i could seem to get on line in linux, that was about 3 years ago

now via ethernet i have 3 systems on line running Kubuntu, ain't life wonderful ...
