Where are system settings stored?

:banghead: Where are system settings stored?
I created a UBUNTU 11.10 bootable persistent USB on a 8GB pendrive.

After a while my settings are no more saved, I cannot change the desktop or the clock settings anymore.

So I suppose that system settings should be saved somewhere in some file.

Where are system settings stored?

I've read that could be in /etc/X11/xorg.conf

but I don't have/find that file.

So, please, where are system settings stored?
How could I change system settings?

Many thanks.

Mostly in /etc (for system-wide settings) and various hidden directories and files in your home directory (for personal settings).

In case you don't know, "hidden" files are just files with names starting with a ".". Conventionally, most file management programs do not display these unless specifically told to. GUI file managers usually have a menu item for it, and the "ls" command has the "-a" option that makes it list hidden files.

That's only for video driver settings, and it's optional.

All your user specific settings are in your /home/<user name>./.hidden files. Usually designated as ~/.foo files.
