It's the login managers background wallpaper, and yes you can change or eliminate it.

In Ubuntu the screen in question is almost certainly gdm. You can change it by logging in as root or su to root and starting the gdmsetup program. In the gdmsetup program you can both set the wallpaper and set the background color. The background color is currently orange. You can change that or you can have gdm display a background picture instead.
I use gdm and have specified a green background and a Debian background picture. When I boot I get a green background until gdm gets the background picture displayed. I don't have auto login.

Gdmsetup program
Jailbait
Thanks for the reply
Opened gdmsetup and it is the same program as login window preference
Have tried changing the color numerous times with no success
I am sure that not using the login window would negate the changes in login window preferences.
Any further help will be appreciated

What is this screen between boot and desktop
Any one else have any ideas as to how I can eliminate this screen.
It is not the login manager as I have activated the login and changed colors and themes
This screen continues to display whether or not the login manager is active
Thanks for any help

(Solved)What is this screen between boot and desktop
This screen is pre session screen and cannot be eliminated but the color can be changed
From a terminal /etc/gdm/presession/default open and find the default color at the bottom of the page
Change to which ever color you desire
