VLC media player cannot play WMV files
I installed the VLC player and it is playing MPG and AVI movies with no problems. I cannot, however, play WMV media files. I do get sound but no video.
I did an apt-get install w32codecs but I still don't see anything, even after a reboot.
Any suggestions on getting WMV media files to work?
There are a few different versions of *.wmv, the newer ones won't work on 64bit. Try using raw mplayer from a terminal, it has very useful output to help debug codec issues like this

Great! Mplayer can play WMV files. I wonder why VLC can't play WMV files.
I was able to uninstall the Mozilla-vlc-plugin and install the mplayer-plugin for Firefox via the Synaptics package manager. I can now view my streaming videos (WMV).
