Virtualization in Ubuntu...

I am using Ubuntu 8.04. I want to use Windows XP on it. Should I use Virtual Box(Sun Microsystem) or VMWare ???? Or is there any alternative option available ????

Please suggest me !!!!!!!

Cheers

use either, both work well. virtualbox is already within apt, so that would probably be an easier option.

I use VirtualBox. It works great, the only issue, minor to me, is that my kernel got an upgrade, but there is no updated VB module to match my now-upgraded kernel. They'll get it fixed though.

Do you have dkms installed? That package, available in the repositories, should automatically rebuild kernel modules to match updated kernels.

I did not know about that, thanks! It's going to take me a while to learn to use it though. The man page says it needs source to build the new module, so how do you know what source you need and where to find it?

I believe the source is already there, since VirtualBox has to build its own kernel module when it installs itself. I'm sure there is a way to force dkms to rebuild the VirtualBox module, but another solution may just be to install dkms, and re-install the VirtualBox packaged (so that it registers with dkms). That should fix your module problem and keep you updated with future kernel upgrades.

OK, I found the source, it's right there in the repository. I re-installed everything, but dkms did not seem to have a role anywhere. So I went back to the man page which makes more sense now that I know where to find the source. And basically its syntax is "dkms <action> <options>". Actions include build, install, and uninstall modules. Options include "-m" which means the name of the module, and "-v" which is the version of the module on which to execute the specified action. So it sounds like I just tell it to "build -v" (the module version I want). Not sure, though... Also dkms.conf has to be configured, so I'll take a look at that.
And just fyi, this is a minor issue for me and not time-sensitive, so it won't exactly be the end of the world if it doesn't work! But thanks again for your help.

Win XP virtualized into ubuntu Intrepid

Hi,

I'm using win XP with Virtual box since october. It works great.
I've got 3 Mb RAM and I gave 2 MB to that win xp virtualization when running, it runs really performing.

The first thing I had to do after the setup was the requested installation of service pack n° 3.

I prefere Virtual Box because it is totally open source and free, instead of VMware that is partly free and partly under a payed licenced agreement

Enjoy your next VBox experience.
