Viewing available wireless networks in Edgy
Like many of us, I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 6.10 and ran into some problems. As with any upgrade, I expected problems to come up (and a few did). My problem is this:
With all previous versions of Ubuntu (from 5.10), my wireless card has been detected, and using the "Administration->Networking" dialogue, I was able to see the wireless networks available to me. With edgy though, my wireless card works, but I can't browse the networks. When I click the drop down arrow, it shows nothing being available. However, if I explicitly define the name of the network, it will connect. Is there some way I can fix this? Thanks ahead of time, /vital_101 |
Hey everyone,
I just thought I'd let everyone know that I managed to find a workaround for the problem. I learned about a package called "NetworkManager". After doing a little bit of research, I found this to be vastly superior to the network management software included by default. I installed it, and everything works great now. Note: I hate to comment out all of the connections I wanted NetworkManager to mange in my /etc/network/interfaces file. /vital_101 |
Network manager is the best option right now. It does have its warts, like not being able to work without DHCP.

Wireless radar scan
There's a program called WiFi Radar that you can get from the repositories that'll do the job - although mine doesn't pick up my neighbour's wireless like it used to.
