OK, you have Ubuntu (what version???)on an AOpen 1845 laptop (1.8/2.0/2.4Ghz version???)which my investigations on Google show uses the ATI 4X AGP video hardware. That leads me to think you may want to investigate using one of three drivers:
vesa...which may be installed by default by the installer, as it is a "catch all" driver;
Frame Buffer...which again is generic, with very few "bells and whistles" but can get you round some weird hardware issues;
proprietary fglrx drivers:see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI
Now you say you need to be su to install the driver. If you go into a windowed (GNOME or KDE) environment, then pull down the "system"/"administration" menu, you will find a menu item "Display", where you can set up your driver, etc. When you select the Display option, you will be prompted for your root password, and the function will be just as if you were root. Try that and see what comes up. If it allows you to do what you need, that's good. If you need further help, we need far more information...like for instance responding "I have no idea wat driver it is" doesn't really make it easy to drill down into the problem...you must be working with the driver, so how about something even as basic as a filename??
