USB Stick Not Detected
Hey all,
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 atm and it's not detecting my USB stick. Well I think it knows it's there but I can't open it and well, not too familiar with all the terminal codes thus I could use some help in that department. Any ideas though? I can get the USB stick to work on windows and never had a problem with it really... Thanks. |
Detach the USB stick, next in a terminal window run 'sudo tailf /var/log/messages' then attach stick: now lines should appear talking about USB. Run 'sudo lsusb': this shows all USB device chip set names the system has recognized. Run 'sudo fdisk -l': this shows you all hard disk(-like) devices and their partitions. Posting the USB lines from syslog and the chip set and partition information should help indicate what's up with the stick.

This has worked like a dream,
thank you very much. Although truthfully I've got other pressing troubles with this computer via startup, it never goes to Ubuntu straightaway, I get an error message saying something would not work and I'm able to type in things which I really don't know about. I lucked out by figuring typing 'exit' gets me to the desktop. If it sounds like something you might also be able to help me out with I'd appreciate it and will get you the more detailed information to work out whats really wrong. In fact, I was running Windows not long ago but could not start it as I'd get to the Windows loading screen and it'd just restart over and over. I get the feeling I have some registry files missing but then again, I also get the feeling that this assumption is merely a stab in the dark, especially since I don't know a whole lot when it comes to boot errors. Anyway, thanks again mate. |
