USB modem Hauwai EC1260 on ubuntu not being recognized

I own a Tata Photon plus usb modem which is a Hauwai EC 1260 and am not able to configure it on my ubuntu installation.

I have used it perfectly on my Mandriva/openSUSE installation so there should not be any question about its not supporting linux.

the menthod I used to connect to the internet was

lsusb :- to find the vendorID and productID.

modprobe usbserial vendor=0xAAAA product=0xBBBB with AAAA and BBBB being vendor and product ID respectively.

wvdialconf : to create the /etc/wvdial.conf file followed by subsequent editing of the file to insert username and password in it.

finally wvdial ... to dial the connection. The file /etc/resolv.conf was also edited the first time to include the nameserver values

but in case of ubuntu everything fails as soon as I fire wvdialconf command. It terminates with and error stating "modem not found". :(

In case of Mandriva/openSUSE wvdialconf used to check ports 7 to eight ports but in ubuntu it checks only 4 ports which perhaps arr labeled S0 to S3.

Please help me to sort this thing out.

One probable error might be due to the mounting of virtual CDROM inbuilt into the device which contains the installation files for its being configured on windows.

Not to be an ass, but have you looked through the ubuntu forums and mailing lists for a solution?

of course yes

dunno about the mailing lists but I did check the forum ... and found really tricky means there... one suggestion nearly screwed my installation.

most people have stated that its not recognized as modem because its first mounted as a storage medium so you have to unmount it first .. and for this action they provided steps to create a rules file. Upon following that I ended up with a system that could not boot .. and my slot-load dvd drive kept on ejecting disk that was not present (the command being executed was something like: /etc/udev/eject %k).

To rectify this I had to boot with clonezilla live CD and delete the .rules file I had just created because Ubuntu's live CD was not letting me delete/modify anything stating the file system was read only.

well that was slightly off track. can anyone please help me out... I have posted this only after scrambling through web for approx 10 hrs and If I have missed something it must have been in some seriously shabby corner of internet.

please help me out.

back to openSUSE

never mind people I managed to run openSuse on my new laptop ... so no probs now ... and hence I dont have to give a damn about ubuntu anymore :)
