you need to look if it is recognized, and where.

Here it is set as sdc
So you can mount it
sudo mkdir /mount
sudo mount /dev/sdc /mount

You need to look in the log file which device is used
On MY system it was sdc
Jan 10 15:02:01 cannabis kernel: [28354.224222] sd 7:0:0:0: [sdc] Write Protect is off
On your system it can be different
You could first try to install pmount
apt-get install pmount
remove the stick and reconnect it
This should automount it

Your mount command is not quite right.
You need to mount a partition, not the device and you probably also need to specify the filesystem type.
Try
Code:
mount -t vfat /dev/sdc1 /mount
I assumed the device's filesystem is vfat and it is being seen as sdc - check your logfile after the device has been plugged in.
But maybe it is broken, my (k)ubuntus have auto-mounted USB disks automatically since about 6.06
