Hah - I've found, and I see others have noted this, that the tiny partition in hda1 is a recovery partition. You don't really want to remove this.

This will make the XP partition as hda2.

The grub.conf or menue.lst file should list the windows as hd(0,1) (I think).
So:

tjull: Commiserations:
... the hd(0,1) is correct for you ... but we needed you to show us what menue.lst (or grub.conf) says to do with this partition. The error message says it dosn't recognise the filesystem. This usually meansnthat the filesystem was corrupted in some important way. ... Shame I didn't get here in time to warn you off what windows did to you.

Don't worry, there are excellent alternatives to your lost software.

Haupage PVR and mythtv are supposed to be supported... depending. I'll look out for the post.

I am using System Commander on a 2 HD system. I have XP on the first one and Linux on the second. I used "hd1,0" to put Grub on the first partition of the second drive and all works well.

I bought System Commander as I never could get the "dual boot" thing to work with Fedora's installation discs, so be advised.

Hmmm... I've yet to get fedora's installation going properly first time (to be fair - I installed FC4 as an upgrade first time, then did a clean install successfully the second time.)

Folk "searching" into this thread should note there is a GRUB tutorial in LQ.

I had been using RH stuff since RH 6 and knew too much about duel booting to look for the Grub tutorial. Live & learn.
I did get FC 4 installed (several times that is ). Kept getting random lines and other erratic behavior. Re-installed FC3. no problems. made new FC4 disks, reinstalled FC4. same problem so I thought I would take a look at Ubontu. Everything worked first time thru.
I had tried Debi an ("woodie") but needed KDE 3 & Qt 3 and Ubuntu's 6 months cycle seemed worth a try.
Thanks.

Smile Get Grub Working

I have a multiboot system with 5 OSs on it. 4 windows & Ubuntu 704. Use it for teaching networking. 3 primary partitions, Extended with Ext3, Linux Swap, then FAT32 the rest.

Ubuntu was done last, and installed and configured Grub.

Worked fine for quite some time, then stopped, with Server 03 giving a Autocheck not Found. Some students have had the same problem with Win XP.

The problem was that Grub was correctly activating the primary partition for the selected Win OS, but was not un-hiding it. Using pqboot (a DOS active partition switcher from Partition Magic) you could set the partition you wanted active & unhidden, then Grub could do it's stuff.

Tried all sorts of fixes, but eventually manually added lines to grub to un-hide the target primary partition and hide the others.

After huge amounts of digging & experimenting, I came up with the following (with variations for each O/S, hard disk etc) I have seen lots of info around on this, but I think this will work for most situations.
The unhide and hide combinations are the critical part, but for XP and Server 03 rootNOVERIFY (rather than root) is needed to make it work.

title Windows Win 2K & 2K Server (Win Loader)
unhide (hd0,0)
hide (hd0,1)
hide (hd0,3)
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
# savedefault
makeactive
chainloader +1

# on /dev/sda2

title Windows 2003 Server
unhide (hd0,1)
hide (hd0,0)
hide (hd0,3)
rootnoverify (hd0,1)
# savedefault
makeactive
chainloader +1

# on /dev/sda4

title Windows 98 SE
unhide (hd0,3)
hide (hd0,1)
hide (hd0,0)
rootnoverify (hd0,3)
savedefault
makeactive
chainloader +1
