upgrading from i386 to i686 packages on 6.06

Hi There,

I have been running ubuntu 6.06 for a month or so now. I originally installed it using i386 packages and kernel. I have recently upgraded to the i686 kernel, and wonder if there is any easy way or if possible to upgrade the rest of the system to i686 packages. Maybe it makes no difference, perhaps someone can explain.

Thanks.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the kernel related packages are the only ones offered in i686. I've heard that it really wouldn't make that much of a difference if all the packages were i686. An exception would be if you compiled the system for your specific architecture, like using Gentoo. Since the kernel manages such low level processes, using an i686 kernel actually does provide some speed benefit.

So what I'm trying to say is that you can't upgrade the rest of the system to i686 because there are no i686 packages for anything except the kernel.

cheers for the reply, I suspected this might be the case, but wasn't entirely sure.
