It depends - how badly mangled are the Debian package tools?
You could try using 'apt-cdrom' to add the later version to your repository list, then:
comment out the older lines in /etc/apt/sources.list
apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade
Odds are it will work; I can't think of any big changes between the two that would be likely to kill some installed packages etc.
But - just in case, backup your data and backup your list of installed software (so you don't spend several days installing software as you realize you need it).
