Upgrade from 6.06 to 6.10

I see lots of post about problems upgrading to 7.10 but nothing about upgrading to 6.06. I have been trying to upgrade from Ubuntu version 6.06. The instructions are to upgrade sequentially, first to version 6.10. The instructions say:
"
'You can only upgrade to 6.10 "Edgy Eft" from Ubuntu 6.06 ("Dapper Drake"). (see UpgradeNotes)
Upgrading using Update Manager

If you want to upgrade from 6.06 LTS to 6.10, run the following command (either via ALT-F2 or a terminal):

gksu "update-manager -c".

When I attempted to do this the following message was received:

"Could not open location 'file:///gksu "update-manager -c'

Details: The location or file could not be found."

I don't know what I did wrong but I tried it again. This time it told me that my system was up to date and I selected "UPDATE". After running a bit, apparently stalling on file 5 of 12, I received the following:

"Error during update

A problem occured during the update. This is usually some sort of network problem, please check your network connection and retry"

The following information was provided:

"Failed to fetch http://packages.freecontrib.org/plf/...86/Packages.gz 404 Not Found
Failed to fetch http://packages.freecontrib.org/plf/...86/Packages.gz 404 Not Found
Failed to fetch http://packages.freecontrib.org/plf/...rce/Sources.gz 404 Not Found
Failed to fetch http://packages.freecontrib.org/plf/...rce/Sources.gz 404 Not Found"

I know there is no network problem. I am sending this problem via my network connection.

Is there an answer to this problem?
Am I going to be forced to buy another CD or DVD?

Charlie

Do you have a lot of data already on the machine? If not, it's probably easiest (if you have broadband) just to download the *.iso file for the newest Ubuntu CD, then burn it to CD ("Burn from Disc Image") and install from the newest CD.

Can you post the output of cat /etc/apt/sources.list? It appears that it can't find a particular repository it's looking for.

If you want to try doing the upgrade, open a command terminal and perform the command again. If it fails, copy and paste the contents of the window to here for us. That way we can see the exact errors as it goes along.
