Updates that don't

When I start Ubuntu 7.10 the update icon shows updates available.
I open the Update manager and this shows 2 items;
1. gnome-themes-extras (4MB)
2. vmware-server (75MB)
The first of these is "unchecked" and cannot be selected
If I run the vmware update it runs for some time then reports that the update has failed.
How do I get rid of these useless updates without losing any real updates?
Thanks Cliff
