Updatedb: Error message

When I try to updatedb: I get the following message.
updatedb: fatal error: You are not authorised to create a default sloacte database!
What am I doing wrong, I feel it must be something obvious.

I know that the powers that be want to keep things short and to the point, but some error messages are a little too terse for me. It would be very helpful to have some indication that "You must be root to run this script!" That's not too cryptic, is it?
